Sea Grape Cottage is where you’ll experience some of nature’s greatest wealth and tranquility. Many of our clients have been seeking this kind of unique property and here it is now! We think of these words by poet Gary Snyder: “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.”
The owner shared with us her deep feelings and history about this sanctuary:
Sea Grape Cottage is Saba’s only ocean-front home, where Cove Bay is your front yard. The sounds and breezes of the ocean fill your day. The enormous seagrape tree in the front yard offers shade, and the porch is perfect for meals, where you can enjoy the captivating view of the cove.
The outer walls are stone-faced cement blocks, easy to upkeep, and extremely strong. You have an amazing kitchen that looks out directly over the bay.
This home is away from the bustle of life and adjacent to several walking trails and Saba’s tide pools. Walk to Cove Bay for a swim every morning. Listen to the tropicbirds circle the cove every afternoon…
Sea Grape Cottage is named for the amazing seagrape tree at the front of the property. My husband, Joe and I began visiting the seagrape tree in the late 1980’s. Joe started to trim the then small tree in a manner that would later optimize the tree’s shape and the shade that was offered. Over 40 years we have nurtured the tree and developed our life around the tree.
We eventually created a restaurant on the site named, “The Sea Grape Grill.” Our dear friend and well known artist on Saba, Heleen Cornet, presented us with a beautiful hand painted sign featuring the seagrape tree for The Sea Grape Grill. We enjoyed tourists and Saba people coming down to the cove and sitting over the Cove Bay, eating and having fun.
After running the restaurant for several years, Joe decided to retire from the restaurant business and turned the building into our home, adding the kitchen and bedroom wings. The large kitchen is such a marvel, looking out at the water view. Joe passed away before we could move down together to Sea Grape Cottage. I have enjoyed living here for the past 5 years, watching our beloved seagrape tree thrive with our orchids nestled below the tree, watching turtles surface in the cove, and the seabirds circling and calling to each other. A juvenile green heron was spotted here several years ago and lives now as a full-grown heron in the seagrape tree. She often comes to the front porch to listen to the music I play and I can testify to the fact that she bobs up and down with the music!
Sea Grape Cottage is most of the time, serene and nature filled, and some of the time, full of guests and life and parties. I believe you will love this cottage and our seagrape tree as we have.”
