Stop Putting Saba on Your Bucket List – Albert & Michael – Saba Island Properties

Stop Putting Saba on Your Bucket List - Albert & Michael - Saba Island Properties

“It’s on my bucket list.”

We hear this phrase frequently at our real estate company – Saba Island Properties. A potential guest calls, excited to visit our Caribbean island. But the villa they want is booked. Or the ferry schedule doesn’t align. Or the connecting flight is full.

“Thanks for trying,” they say with resignation. “I’ll get to Saba one day. It’s on my bucket list.”

The term “bucket list” has an interesting origin. In 1999, screenwriter Justin Zackham wrote himself “Justin’s List of Things to Do Before I Kick the Bucket”—a personal catalog of dreams and goals. He shortened it to “Justin’s Bucket List.” The first item? Getting a movie made at a major Hollywood studio. That list eventually became his screenplay for the 2007 film “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The phrase caught on so powerfully that by 2012, it appeared in both Webster’s and Oxford English dictionaries.

But here’s what we’ve learned after twelve years on Saba: bucket lists are where adventures go to wait.

The Transformation

When people finally make it to Saba—when they stop planning and start experiencing—something shifts. They stand on the edge of a volcanic peak surrounded by clouds, miles of spacious blue Caribbean sea and sky. They dive reefs where sea turtles glide past like old friends. They walk village streets where everyone greets them by name after just two days.

And then they tell us: “Why did I wait so long?”

The regret isn’t about Saba specifically. It’s about the years they spent saying “someday” instead of “now.”

From Bucket List to Life List

Your bucket list might include standing on the Great Wall of China, running a marathon, writing a book, or living abroad. These aren’t just checkboxes. They’re invitations to become someone who does remarkable things.

Twelve years ago, Albert and I moved here from New York City. We didn’t put “live on a Caribbean island” on a bucket list and wait. We chose the quality of life we wanted and built it. That decision changed everything.

Visitors who finally reach Saba don’t say, “I’m glad I checked this off my list.” They say, “This is an adventure you must experience!” They transform from people who collect dreams to people who live them.

Why Saba?

After living and working in New York City for 40+ years I leaped right out of the rat race of corporate America; leaving behind the relentless stress and competition that was wasting me; to rediscover what really matters to me in life.

We went looking for a new home all over the world - the Azores, the Maldives, France, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Malta, the Caribbean and by pure luck, found Saba.

Saba gives me peace, joy, freedom and a community where I feel I belong. People are respected here; living free and open, in the heart of deep nature and incredible beauty. It's a remarkable change.

The work we do enables us to care about other people. Helping them find a new home with practical empathy for their needs and dreams. It's an emotional investment. To listen. To understand. It's work that matters to us. Work we're proud of.

Maybe you have similar yearnings for change. Wanting a better way to live.
