We must take care of her.
We begin by asking – What does Saba want?
It’s the most immediate question to answer – a compass to follow and guide us as we experience the island for a visit or the decision to move here as a resident.
If you look around and listen, you’ll see Saba’s needs. That’s what’s deserved in any relationship. Listening and caring are a living relationship.
We have this living relationship as real estate agents when we moved here 12 years ago. We ask what the community of Saba wants and doesn’t want. We talk to tourists, investors, and renters and ask what they want from Saba’s services, hospitality, land, and life.
Saba wants respect.
Saba wants us to take action with earnest kindness and love for the extraordinary nature she holds.
People like us do things like this. We care for the magnificence of the earth.
Safety is here. It’s the number one benefit. It’s also a friendly community. Peaceful. Clean. Energetic. Healthy.
Saba is resilient and needs us to be responsible for building what is sustainable.
Saba works on sustainability, attracting people who want to live a quality life on a Caribbean island.
– Solar power is on Saba, working daily for 8 -10 hours.
– Since 2021, there has been a plastic ban, and the recycling program collects 1 million pounds of recyclable materials yearly.
– Our hydroponic farm uses 80% less water than most other farming methods, providing locally-grown produce for people and grocery stores. (Nearly everything on Saba is shipped in.)
– The Saba Marine Park encompasses the island up to 200 feet in depth, is protected, and is one of Saba’s great resources.
– Building a new harbor and a couple of new housing projects is growth change – giving back – adding to the appeal for living a glorious life that cares about the welfare of Saba.
Saba is splendor. It’s an enviable spot – uncomplicated – basic – humble – private – exclusive.
We love these words by – Christine Luckasavitch – Algonquin and Mixed Settler Educator. They say an incredible amount about what Saba wants and what we gratefully owe her.
“When we listen, we enter into a relationship – an agreement that we bind ourselves to. In this relationship, we learn how to live in reciprocal respect with all that surrounds us, both the seen and the unseen. We must live in a state of active relationship, not only taking but also giving back. This giving back may take literal form or manifest itself in observing, learning, and gently interacting. If we listen, those stories are always available to us. All those around us – the plants, animals, trees, water, air – are our patient and willing teachers. We must remain open to this knowledge that is so willingly shared with us so long as we listen.”
