There’s a name for what’s happening; sociologists call it lifestyle migration. Remove the academic language, and it’s simple: people choosing, on purpose, to move somewhere that will give them a better life. Not running from something. Running toward it.

It doesn’t look like one kind of person. It’s the couple retiring early into their next act, their next adventure. It’s the fifty-five-year-old still building a business, just doing it somewhere the air is clearer. It’s remote workers whose laptops don’t care what island they’re on. It’s families who want their kids closer to the ocean than to a screen and safer.

What they’re chasing rhymes: warmer climates, getting back to nature, distance from crowds, days that don’t run on other people’s urgency. Lower stress. Sometimes lower cost of living. Room to breathe.

For many, it’s tangled up with something bigger. The belief that how we live should protect where we live. That the earth’s beauty and diversity are worth defending, the same way people deserve justice, fairness, and respect. It’s not a separate value. It’s part of the same decision.

Fourteen years ago, Albert and I made that decision leaving New York City. Not as an escape, exactly, but as a choice to live differently, on purpose, in a place that would ask something real of us. I still remember how few people understood our choice back then. Now I watch the world catching up to it.

The inquiries we get (many more of lately) carry a different weight. People aren’t just asking about square footage or views. They’re asking, underneath it all, whether a place can hold them steady while everything else — the wars, the money anxiety, the politics that feel more about power than people — keeps shifting under their feet. What they’re really shopping for is a life. And the thing they can’t find enough of, wherever they’re calling from, is quality of life.

Researchers Michaela Benson and Karen O’Reilly, who helped build this field of study, describe it exactly the way we understand it — people relocating in deliberate pursuit of a more meaningful way of living, not a bigger paycheck.

InterNations’ 2026 Expat Insider survey (nearly 8,000 expats across 31 countries) ranks destinations on quality of life, safety, and financial stability as core measures of a good life abroad.

Remitly’s 2026 Immigration Index (evaluating 82 countries) tracks the same instinct: people increasingly weighing cost of living, safety, and opportunity when deciding where to build a life.

We didn’t need the research. Fourteen years of conversations with buyers already had. But it’s proof that what we see happening on Saba is part of something much bigger than one small beautiful island.

Which is why this July mattered. Saba’s tourism marketing team landed six national media placements — MSN, Islands, Travel Off Path — putting the island in front of an estimated 281 million people. The coverage captured what keeps people coming back: that legendary short runway, the cloud-draped peak of Mount Scenery, hiking, diving, friendly, safe, and a stillness and stunning beauty that’s rarer every year in the Caribbean.

Every one of those million-plus just discovered this place exists. Some might forget it by tomorrow. A few will feel the pull the way we did years ago and start asking the same questions we once did and make a valuable new life decision.

The world is loud and fast right now. Saba isn’t. That’s not an accident. More people are starting to notice and find the good-life opportunity Saba offers.
