For twelve and a half years, we’ve written this blog every single month.
After all this time, we still have plenty to say about Saba. That tells you something about the island.
A day that honors the traveler
On September 27, the world celebrated World Tourism Day.
The day has a history worth knowing. In September 1979, the General Assembly of UN Tourism (formerly the UNWTO) met in Torremolinos, Spain, and decided to create it. The first celebration followed in 1980, and it has been held every year since.
Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian national, is widely considered the person behind the creation of World Tourism Day.
The date was chosen with care. September 27 is the anniversary of the day the organization’s founding statutes were adopted in 1970. It also arrives as the high season ends in the northern hemisphere and begins in the southern, a moment when the whole world is either coming home or setting out.
The first theme, in 1980, focused on tourism helping protect cultural heritage and build peace and understanding between people. This year, with El Salvador as host, the focus was on how digital tools and artificial intelligence are reshaping travel.
Those two themes are forty-six years apart, and both matter to Saba.
Technology may help more people discover a small island they had never heard of. But what they find when they arrive is what that first theme was about: heritage that has been cared for, nature that has been protected, and a community that welcomes you.
We see World Tourism Day as an honoring of Saba and of everyone who visits. Good guests and good hosts keep this island what it is.
Where a visit can lead
Nearly everyone who has moved to Saba began as a visitor. We did too.
Saba opens your eyes to the possibility of living a different life, in a better way. Some people feel it instantly and know the island is for them. (Even for people visiting for just one day.) They keep returning. They rent, to find out what it feels like to live in the community rather than pass through it. They begin planning, for now and into the future.
We saw both ends of that journey in recent weeks.
We closed on a lovely two-bedroom cottage, bought by a local businessperson who will turn it into a rental home. That is one more door open to guests who want to discover what life here feels like.
And we sold a magnificent piece of land to people who knew Saba was their future. They will be building their home here.
One sale welcomes the next visitors. The other turns visitors into neighbors. That is how tourism works on Saba.
What Saba holds for you
Saba holds many opportunities, and many promises.
The promise of living in sheer beauty, where our soft, lush green rainforest meets cliffs that drop sharply into the expansive blue of the Caribbean Sea.
Peace. Relaxation. Room to breathe and think.
Magnificent trails that inspire you at every turn. The mystery of the world beneath the sea. Friendly people who are always open to helping you learn about Saba.
In many ways, the island seems suspended in time. Untouched. Pristine. It is right there in the name: The Unspoiled Queen.
A breath of incredible freshness.
Your turn
Maybe you have already felt it. Maybe you are still wondering whether a place like this could be in your stars.
Come and see. Walk the trails. Rent a cottage. Ask us every question you have. Whether you want a home that is ready today to move into or land to build on tomorrow, we would love to help you find your place on Saba.
